As an online entrepreneur, getting to know your audience is crucial for success. While analytics and surveys provide handy data, nothing beats the real, unfiltered insights you get from just chatting with your customers.
Talking to your audience is a key step in really understanding what drives them, how they feel, and the challenges they face that shape their behavior. While surveys and analytics give you a good overview of trends, interviews help you dig into personal stories and experiences that can really shape your offerings. Having conversations with your audience not only builds a stronger relationship but also encourages loyalty and support for your brand. Plus, by actively listening to their struggles, you can pinpoint specific pain points that your products or services can tackle, ensuring you meet their needs more effectively. So how do you do this?
How to Conduct Effective Interviews:
Define Your Goals: Be clear about the specific info you want to gather from the interview. Are you trying to define your Dream Customer? Using the interviews as research for an upcoming product? Knowing your goal will help you stay on track through the conversations.
Choose the Right Participants: Pick a diverse group of people who represent your target audience. At EBA, we split them into prior purchasers, prior non-purchasers (who have gone through a launch and did not purchase) and people who are newer to the list.
Prep Your Questions: Come up with open-ended questions that encourage detailed and thoughtful responses.
Active Listening: Really pay attention to your interviewees' answers, and ask follow-up questions for deeper insights. Your goal is to dig deeper into their true struggles and desires so you can uncover more ways to help them.
Take Notes: Jot down key points and quotes for later reference. If you’re meeting virtually on Zoom, recording the call will make this even easier.
Break it Down: Review your interview notes and transcripts to spot common themes and patterns. Note common verbiage, struggles and desires—this will be helpful for messaging in the future!
Key Questions to Ask:
Purchase Journey: How did you come across our brand? What made you decide to buy/not buy from us?
Customer Experience: What do you love most about our product/service? Is there anything that could be improved? (Ask similar questions for your non-buyers)
Pain Points: What challenges were you facing before using our product/service? How has our solution made things better for you?
Future Needs: What goals do you have for the future in our niche? How can we help you achieve them?
Once you’ve gathered some valuable insights from your interviews, it’s time to use them!
Start by tweaking your products or coming up with new ones that meet the needs you've identified from the feedback. This info can also help you adjust your marketing messaging so it really connects with what your Dream Customer cares about. And don’t forget to create content that not only solves your audience’s problems but also answers their questions, keeping them engaged and supported!
Taking the time to chat with your audience can give you a competitive edge and help you build a thriving online business. Just remember, getting to know your customers' needs and dreams is the key to success!
